Obituary of Ruben Pinkerton

A memorial service for Ruben Logan Pinkerton, 90, of Decatur, Texas will be 10:00 am Wednesday, July 8, 2020 in the pavilion on the east side of Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur, officiated by Pastor Bill Hughes. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Tuesday, July 7 at Hudson & Torres Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport, Texas.

 

Ruben, a military veteran, passed away in Bridgeport on Independence Day, July 4, 2020, twelve days before his 91st birthday.

 

He was born July 16, 1929 in Roby, Texas to Allen James and Grace Ellen (Bazzlay) Pinkerton. After graduation from Decatur High School, he served our country as a member of the US Air Force. Ruben married Barbara Sparks on May 4, 1958 in Wall, Texas.

 

Ruben was a longtime co-owner of Pinkerton’s Grocery in Decatur, starting out in the family business by sacking groceries.

 

In addition to successfully running the store with his sister Jimmie for over 44 years, he was very involved in the community. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club (with 63 years of perfect attendance), the Jaycees, and the Decatur Eighter Square Dance Club (for 37 years), as well as being Chairman of the Salvation Army Decatur Service Unit for nearly 50 years.

 

He joyfully attended the Wise County Reunion for 88 years, and was on the reunion committee for 39 years.

 

His interests were pets, airplanes, and square dancing. He had a great love for people and enjoyed spending time with family and his many friends.

 

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Pinkerton of Decatur; son Tracy Pinkerton of Decatur; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

 

Ruben was preceded in death by his parents A.J. and Gracie Pinkerton; brother Emmit Pinkerton; and sisters Jimmie Hlavek, Emma Ree Mosier, Lou Ellen Nivens, and Billie Laverne Pinkerton.
