Jose was born on May 2, 1926 in Ballinger, Texas to Manuel and Anita (Nunez) Ortega. He served our country in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He was wounded in action and awarded a Purple Heart. After his service in the military, Jose spent his career with Armstrong Rubber Company as a driver at the proving grounds. He retired after many years of employment.

Jose, known as Papi, was a free-spirited people person. He never let life beat him down. He endured poverty as a child, getting wounded in the Philippines during WWII, countless tragedies, and losses, and through it all, lead the pack as a gentle, kind, and loving patriarch. He was humorous, a great leader, articulate with his looks and manners, a cheerful giver and always calmed the storms with wisdom and kindness. If you met him, you would never forget him, and his family will forever treasure him as a blessing from the good Lord.

Jose is survived by his wife Alicia Ortega of Pecos, Texas; daughter Gloria Matta of Bridgeport; brother Jesus Ortega of Odessa, Texas; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and three brothers.
